Lesson Overview
During "Floating in Space" Kindergartner's are challenged to begin exploring mixed media art, using crayons and watercolor paint. We begin by looking at different examples of hot air balloons. Students are asked to identify repeating patterns in shapes, lines, and colors. We discuss vertical, horizontal, and diagonal lines. Students begin their planning and ideation designing a hot air balloon from a template. Student's use pencils various types of lines to create the design for their hot air balloon. Students identify the background of their work and include ground, trees, cactus, clouds, sun, birds, etc. After our rough draft "practice" student's work on their final draft using black crayon to create their lines. Students will use crayons to color everything except for the background or sky. We explore what happens when students use watercolor paint over top of crayon.
